INDEPENDENT

STUDY

Independent Study allows interpreters to design their own learning experience and earn CEUs for activities outside of traditional workshops or courses. These activities must support your professional growth and cannot come from regular job duties or employer-required training.

Below is an easy breakdown of the types of activities that qualify and how to apply.

Independent Study: Approved Activity Types

Research

Conduct original research aligned with professional interpreting practice, linguistics, ethics, or Deaf-centered topics.

Study Groups

Participate in structured group study sessions with one or more colleagues. Meetings must occur at scheduled times and align with the goals and objectives outlined in the Activity Plan.

Publication

Write materials intended for publication, such as articles for VIEWS, FACES, academic journals, or books.
Special Benefit: GaRID members earn 0.1 FREE CEUs per FACES article.

Multimedia Learning

Independently review a video or multimedia resource and write a reflection or answer guided questions to show your understanding.

Course Instruction

Develop and/or present content such as:

  • Workshops

  • Speeches

  • Short courses

  • Webinars or teleconferences

You may earn CEUs for developing, presenting, or both—but each activity is only awarded once per CEU cycle.

Literature Review

Read and analyze professional literature on a selected topic. Submit a written summary with:

  • Key insights

  • Critical reflection

  • How you plan to apply what you learned

Mentorship

Participate in a structured mentor/mentee relationship focused on specific learning goals.

  • Both the mentor and mentee can earn CEUs.

  • CEUs for mentors are awarded only for the mentor’s learning, not the mentee’s progress.

Commercial Self-Study Programs

Complete a structured, commercially produced self-study curriculum.
